Here comes the sun

Today was the first time being able to sit outside in the sun this year, it was lovely. I even brought the garden chairs out from the garage in anticipation of similar days ahead. Had a wander down town this morning, met my son Neal at the bus station as he arrived from Mablethorpe.

I was at the chemists getting some throat pastille's to try, and they seem to have eased the catarrh in my throat, so all in all an eventful day.

Friends, Romans Countrymen etc.

After many comments about, you need to get your hearing checked, I had to agree that my hearing is not the best in certain situations. I had already applied to the MOD veterans department to see if I could claim a pension for loss of hearing caused by my military service, so I needed a valid hearing test.

My hearing test was carried out at Specsavers and confirmed that I had a moderate hearing loss. I was offered free NHS hearing aids as per the image on the left but (flesh colour) and on the 22nd March 2024 had them fitted.

So now I am truly wired for sound and amazed at what I can now hear. They are also controlled by Bluetooth from a smartphone app.

Red Arrows

A few years back in 2019, I was invited to a Red Arrows Association open day at RAF Scampton from an ex Lightning engineer and an Association member. It was an excellent day out having a full display from the reds and a barbecue meal laid on. The chap on the extreme right was my sponsor for the day and is a visit I will never forget. Now RAF Scampton has been closed and the site being used by the MOD to house asylum seekers to the UK, not something I would have ever imagined happening in my lifetime.

Latest Virgin Saga

Last week I ordered a new Broadband and TV package, emails said it would be activated on Sunday. Monday I checked my Virgin account and guess what? No sign of any new contract.

Got on to the Virgin Live chat and after about 30 minutes, eventually got someone to chat to. It appears that the package I ordered and had also email confirmation on, appears to have vanished into the ether.

After quite a lengthy chat, I managed to get a new deal, which sees my current package at a reduced price for the next 18 months, so it certainly is worth chatting to them to get a result, albeit from a call centre in India.

The Manfreds

The Manfreds The Manfreds
Hits & More in ‘24

Thursday 19th September
Tickets: £30

Following the huge success of their 60th anniversary tour in 2023, The Manfreds are excited to be heading to The Riverhead Theatre, Louth, on Thursday 19th September.

They are considered one of the finest and most respected bands from the 1960’s era. Their numerous hits were not just ‘pop’ songs, many were R&B based with an undercurrent of jazz - a very unusual but winning combination of playing style and substance.

As a result, their records have a timeless quality and, some 60 years on, The Manfreds, with original front man Paul Jones, will be performing many of their hits, including ‘Do Wah Diddy Diddy’, one of the most popular and instantly recognisable songs of the ‘60’s, and still the biggest audience pleaser at their concerts, along with a mix of Jazz and Blues covers and tracks from their individual solo albums.

Paul Jones, with his unique harmonica sound, will be joined by Tom McGuinness on guitar, Pete Riley on drums, Mike Gorman on keyboards, Marcus Cliffe on bass, and Simon Currie on saxophone/ flute.

Hearing

For some time now, I have had difficulty, at times, hearing conversations when background noise seems to be interfering. I recently applied through the Government Veterans website to see if I have a claim against the MOD for hearing loss.

As part of the claim , I have to submit a recent audiogram before they can assess my claim. So two weeks back, I booked a free hearing test from our local Specsavers, the test took about an hour, with the results showing I had hearing loss in the lower frequency range. Audiogram, duly emailed to the MOD and awaiting the results of my claim. Not holding out much hope, but live in hope.

Have booked an appointment to have hearing aids fitted on 22nd March 2024. Looking forward to see what benefit they will have.

Virgin Media

Have my broadband and tv package with Virgin and am happy with the product, the prices have gone up as expected every year since I took out the contract, and now we have been notified that the price is going up in April to a price I was not happy with.

I have looked into seeing what other packages we could get from Virgin, and from the website, we could have the same package at less than what we are paying now, by renewing the contract for another 18 months'. So a no-brainer really.

Looking around at other broadband providers, it came no where close to the broadband speed we have now, so am happy to remain with Virgin for now.

Veterans ID Card

This ID card has been a long time coming and is proof of a career in the military. I liked the idea of having an ID card so finding out that it is now available to apply for, I followed the link to the UK Gov website. I entered the details requested and followed what was required as proof of identity, to no avail. The amount of info entered was not enough for proof.

I am computer savvy and found the process so long and drawn out to confuse most folks, so ended up requesting a paper application form by email.

12th March, paper application sent off, fingers crossed all is correct
